Family therapy
Family therapy engages a special method of treating emotional disorders.
Its scope of intervention is not the isolated individual patient but to the
family seen as a whole. Its objective is not only to eliminate symptoms in
individuals or adapt personalities to the environment in which they must
act, but rather to create a new way of living as a family.
Family therapy addresses the problems generated in the context
of family relationships or with significant persons in the person's
life. Family therapy works to identify ways family members relate to
one another that are unhealthy for personal development disabling
them from becoming mature and emotionally autonomous adults.

Family therapy is indicated when the objective is to improve the capacity of family members to support each other. In general, any situation or problem that affects relationships between family members, their functioning and their support role, can benefit from family therapy.

1. Should the whole family go to therapy?
In family therapy, sessions are adapted to the specific situation presented by family members, for this reason sometimes the whole family is asked to attend sessions. On other occasions specific family members will be encouraged to participate.
2.Can family sessions be continued if a member no longer wants to attend?
If any member of the family leaves the treatment it is advised that the rest continue with the therapy to maintain the best possible functioning of the family structure.
3. Is the psychologist obliged to tell the family member who pays for the sessions what the other members individually share?
Respect for the integrity of the family makes it necessary for all members of the family to receive confidentiality.
4. What are the issues addressed in family therapy?
Topics related to demonstrations of affect, effective communication, conflict resolution, the need for recognition and personal security, the manifestation of affection and adaptation to normal changes that occur between generations can be addressed. Likewise, deep topics related to painful or traumatic experiences might be addressed.
5. How long is family therapy session?
A session can last from one to two hours.
